Pittsfield Charter Township purchases water from Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority (YCUA). YCUA purchases water from the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA), formerly known as the Detroit Water and Sewer Department (DWSD).

Water Quality in Pittsfield Township

Over the last 12 to 18 months we have heard much concern over the quality of drinking water in Pittsfield Township and whether or not it is safe to drink. Pittsfield Township receives its water from YCUA, which receives the water from GLWA located in Detroit. GLWA's source for drinking water is the Detroit River. Once the water is treated by GLWA, it is then delivered to YCUA through a series of transmission pipes. Pittsfield Township then receives the water through transmission lines provided by YCUA and connected to our distribution system, which is made up of over 150 miles of water mains. These water mains are owned and operated by the Pittsfield Township Utilities Department. Pittsfield Township's water distribution system is a closed system and provides no connections to the neighboring communities. This isolation protects our system and limits our exposure to concerns which could affect some of our neighboring communities. As such, providing some of the best drinking water in the region.

Sanitary sewers in the township transport sewage to either the Ann Arbor wastewater treatment plant or the Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority wastewater treatment plant.
