Military & Overseas Voting

Attention to military and overseas civilian voters eligible to register and vote in Michigan:

New state and federal laws have streamlined the process for military and overseas civilian voters to register and actively participate in elections. As per the updated legislation, military and overseas civilian voters now have the option to receive their ballots via email or fax, with the requirement to return the voted ballot by mail for security purposes.

Eligible Voters

Military and overseas civilian voters interested on securing ballots for elections in the upcoming calendar year must initiate their request through their local city or township clerk. The new state and federal laws cover the following categories of Michigan voters:

  • Civilian voters residing outside the United States who are eligible to vote in Michigan
  • Spouses or dependents of uniformed service members or Merchant Marine personnel, who, due to the active duty or service of the member, are absent from their city or township of residence (regardless of whether the voter is inside or outside the United States)
  • Members of a uniformed service on active duty, who are absent from their city or township of residence (regardless of whether the voter is inside or outside the United States)
  • Members of the Merchant Marine who, owing to their service in the Merchant Marine, are absent from their city or township of residence (regardless of whether the voter is inside or outside the United States)
